Are you a history buff, or maybe you are just a random fact finder? If you are, this blog post will piquedentures your interest—four fun facts about dentures. There are quite a few interesting facts about dentures that many people haven’t heard of before. Drs. Douglas Goff and Andy Gilbert, Columbus dentists, hope you enjoy!
 
Fact 1
In the past, natural materials were used to construct dentures. Of course, this was way back in the day—from 700BC to the 1800’s. These natural materials included human and animal teeth and ivory from a walrus, elephant or hippopotamus’s tusks.
 
Fact 2
George Washington’s dentures weren’t wooden! Yes, this is true. Hidden behind his serious demeanor, for years people thought that Washington’s set of choppers were made of wood. Research has revealed that Washington had four sets of dentures made of different materials: gold, ivory and human and animal teeth.
 
Fact 3
Paul Revere dabbled in dentistry. After the Battle of Bunker Hill, Revere was able to identify his friend’s, Joseph Warren, dental work—a false tooth supported by a wire. This is also one of the first cases of forensic dentistry.
 
Fact 4 
In 2010, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s partial dentures were sold at an auction for a whopping $23, 723! Although many respected him for being one of the greatest wartime leaders, that’s still a lot of money for a pair of teeth.
